What to look for in a psychologist

Choosing a psychologist is a significant decision. The therapeutic relationship matters as much as qualifications. Here is what the Australian Psychological Society recommends you ask when considering a psychologist for yourself or your child.

Questions worth asking before you commit

  1. 1

Are you registered with AHPRA, and what is your area of specialty?

All psychologists in Australia must be registered with AHPRA. Beyond registration, ask about their specialty such as clinical, educational, neuropsychology, or child and family. Endorsement in a specialty area means additional supervised training.

  2. 2

What therapeutic approaches do you use?

Ask whether they use evidence-based approaches such as CBT, ACT, or DBT, and whether those approaches are appropriate for your child's presentation. For children with autism or developmental disability, ask about specific experience with these populations.

  3. 3

How do you involve parents or carers in therapy?

For children, family involvement is critical. Ask how parents are kept informed, whether sessions include parent coaching components, and what strategies can be practised at home.

  4. 4

How will you measure outcomes and report for NDIS reviews?

Ask what outcome measures they use and whether they can provide written reports suitable for NDIS plan reviews or functional capacity assessments.

  5. 5

Are you NDIS registered, and what are your fees?

NDIA-managed participants must use registered providers. Plan-managed and self-managed participants can use unregistered psychologists. Psychology support falls under Improved Daily Living in most NDIS plans.
